Descending from a long line of revered rabbis, Yakov is expected to follow in his father's footsteps as the leader of an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn. But for Yakov, who questions his faith from an early age, becoming a rabbi is more an obligation than a calling. One summer, he discovers love in Rebecca, a young woman who challenges both his beliefs and his doubts. All too quickly, a family secret tears them apart and their lives diverge.

Confused and curious, Yakov pursues a secular education alongside his rabbinical training. A chance encounter reunites him with Rebecca, who he learns is also studying to become a rabbi. His relationship with her blooms as he and his father continue to drift. But what will become of his relationship with God?

This 20th anniversary re-release of Rabbi, Rabbi, Kane's debut novel, is a masterfully written, deeply engrossing portrait of modern American Judaism. Now more than ever, Kane's intimate prose will move any reader who has ever struggled with the complexities of faith, family, love, and personal identity.

What an amazing book. I was a little unsure whether to try the book when there were only six reviews. However, I took the leap after reading the sample. I read for the whole day. I couldnt put the book down. It tells the story of a very religious young man whose destiny is to become a rabbi. The young woman also comes from an orthodox family and her destiny is to also follow an orthodox life style. But questions and a different out looks on life offer them different choices. You have to read this book, you will not be disappointed.

Rabbi Rabbi Andrew Kane 9780990951582 Books Reviews

Excellent book from Andrew Kane, got me involved from the very beginning. It is an in depth study of how Orthodox and modern Reform Judaism are different, yet similar. I liked the protagonists, and the novel kept me reading and guessing to the very end.
I, honestly, read this awhile ago, and don't remember details (like who narrated). BUT, I do remember the issues and the "making me think." I highly recommend. I don't think there was sexual content, but if there was, it was minimal.
A well written book showing many different aspects of the Jewish religion; the differences and similarities of orthodox, reform, and conservative practices.
I really liked the book. Being someone that attends all types of synagogues, I appreciated the depictions of the characters, their struggles, ability to think outside the box etc. I have already recommended this book to a few others and will be checking what else this author has written
I enjoyed this book but my timing was not great. I read during the High Holidays and I am a recent convert from Reform to Conservative. There were tines when I began questioning myself. Perhaps that was the point of this book. It came together for me just as it did for the author. Thank you for your writing.
I really liked this book. Its an honest look at two people who fall in love but are at different places religiously. It does not sell out . It respects everyone's views without being boring.
I love reading books about Orthodox Judaism and this one did not disappoint. It was a beautiful love story as well as being informative about the many cultural differences about the Orthodox Jews. I recommend this book to anyone who like a good story.
